The Short Answer
In British Columbia in 2026, soil washing typically costs $80 to $200 per tonne. Where a project lands in that range depends on the contaminant, the soil type and the volume being processed. For a straightforward metals-impacted job with a good volume, the lower end is realistic. Fine-grained soils and difficult contaminants push toward the top.

What Soil Washing Is
Soil washing is a treatment process, not a disposal method. Excavated soil is run through water and mechanical separation. Contaminants tend to bind to the finest particles, so the process concentrates the problem into a small high-contamination fraction and leaves the coarser sand and gravel clean enough to reuse. You pay to treat everything, but you only dispose of the small dirty fraction.
What Drives the Cost
Soil type. Sandy and gravelly soils wash well because the clean fraction separates cleanly. Clay and silt hold contamination tightly and lower the recovery of reusable material, which raises the cost per usable tonne.
Contaminant. Metals and heavier petroleum fractions are well suited to washing. Some organics are not, and a treatability test is usually run first.
Volume. Soil washing has real setup and mobilization costs. Small jobs cannot spread those costs over enough material, which is why washing rarely makes sense below a few thousand tonnes.
Disposal of the fine fraction. The concentrated fines still have to go to a permitted facility. The cleaner the separation, the smaller that bill.
When Soil Washing Saves Money
Compare it to the default, which is excavation and off-site disposal at $50 to $200 per cubic metre, most of which is transport and tipping fees. When you have a large volume of granular soil, washing can cut the amount of material you actually pay to landfill by seventy percent or more. That is where it pays off.

The Hidden Line Item: Documentation
Whether soil is washed, treated or hauled away, British Columbia expects a clean paper trail. The clean fraction that gets reused is still relocated soil under the Contaminated Sites Regulation, and the disposed fines need manifests and receipts.
